Alcohol Recovery Treatment at Arms Acres

Alcohol recovery treatment is medical and clinical care that helps a person stop drinking safely, treat what drives the drinking, and build a sober life that lasts. At Arms Acres, care can start with medical detox and continue through residential rehab, outpatient support, and aftercare. This page is for adults who feel drinking has taken control and for the family members who worry about them. It explains how our treatment programs work, what the first days look like, and how to begin. Reaching out early matters, because alcohol misuse often worsens over time, and so do its negative consequences for your physical health, mental health, work, and relationships.

When Drinking Becomes a Reason to Seek Alcohol Treatment

Warning signs include trying to cut back without success, drinking more than you planned, needing a drink to feel steady in the morning, hiding how much you drink, and missing work or family events because of it. Shaking, sweating, anxiety, or poor sleep when you stop are withdrawal symptoms. They mean the body has become dependent, and quitting without medical help can be risky. At that point, professional addiction treatment is the safer path.

Our clinicians treat alcohol use disorder as a form of substance use disorder, a medical condition that deserves the same seriousness as any other illness. Drinking can also overlap with drug abuse or other substance misuse, so your assessment looks at the full pattern of substance use and mental health, not drinking alone.

Arms Acres grew out of one family's experience with alcohol. Robert Arms, a recovering alcoholic, was known to welcome people struggling with addiction into his home. After his death, his wife, Winifred, carried on their work and opened Arms Acres in March 1982. Today, our drug and alcohol rehab in Carmel Hamlet, NY, serves people across New York State.

How Treatment Works Across Our Levels of Care

Your plan starts with a full medical and mental health assessment. Your care team then explains your treatment options and recommends where to begin among our various levels of care. Each level treats substance use disorder with a different amount of structure and medical support, and the plan changes as your recovery journey moves forward.

Medical Detox

Detox is often the first step, and it needs the closest medical oversight. Stopping heavy drinking suddenly can cause serious complications, so physicians and nurses monitor each patient around the clock and manage withdrawal symptoms, using medication when clinically appropriate. Our medically supervised detox program also includes a psychiatric assessment, individual counseling, group therapy, and educational lectures, so the recovery process begins while the body heals.

Residential Rehab

After detox, you may continue with residential treatment on our 54-acre campus in Putnam County, a calm and supportive environment away from the places tied to your substance use. Our 191-bed licensed facility offers a women's program, a men's program, and a co-ed unit. Adult rehabilitation follows an evidence-based curriculum that includes cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, and trauma-informed care. Days combine group therapy, individual sessions, relapse prevention, nutrition education, and fitness, including swimming and yoga. Learn more about our inpatient treatment program.

Outpatient Care Close to Home

Once you are stable, outpatient treatment lets you continue recovery with ongoing support while living at home. Our clinics in Carmel, the Bronx, and Queens provide substance abuse treatment and mental health services. Options include day, evening, and weekend programming, individual and family counseling, relapse prevention, and drug testing. Services vary by clinic, and our Carmel clinic offers telehealth. Many people move from residential rehab to an outpatient program as part of one connected plan.

Addiction Medicine and Medication Management

Medication can make early recovery safer, and it works best alongside counseling and other evidence-based treatment. Our physicians and psychiatrists bring addiction medicine experience to each stage of care. Through medication-assisted treatment, we monitor patients closely and adjust doses as needs change. Suboxone and methadone are offered when a substance use disorder also involves opioids. Our Carmel outpatient clinic also offers psychiatric evaluation and medication management.

Compassionate Care for Behavioral Health and Drug Addiction

Many people we treat also live with mental health conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, or severe anxiety, and some face drug addiction involving opioids, prescription drugs, or other substances. That is why psychiatric care and mental health services are part of treatment from the first day. Substance abuse treatment that ignores mental health leaves too much unresolved. We review your plan as you progress and adjust it to your individual needs. This integrated behavioral health approach helps you manage both substance use and mental health over the long term.

Specialized programs include targeted support for veterans and their families, as well as dedicated programming for LGBTQ patients. Equine therapy and art therapy offer other ways to work through difficult feelings.

How Your Care Team Involves a Loved One

Your care team includes physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, mental health counselors, social workers, and addiction counselors who share one treatment plan for your substance use disorder. Families take part through our family treatment program, which brings a loved one into individual and family sessions. Rehab units have no visiting hours, so family members visit during this program. These sessions help relatives understand addiction and learn how to support recovery without enabling substance use.

Building Lifelong Recovery After Addiction Treatment

Recovery from substance use disorder continues after discharge. Before you leave, you, your family, and your care team build an aftercare plan with community referrals, continued therapy, and clear steps to prevent relapse. Mutual aid groups, including 12 Step programming and SMART Recovery, are part of your stay. Each month, alumni return for our Alkathon program to share their experience, strength, and hope with people early in addiction recovery. Arms Acres has helped transform more than 50,000 lives, and the Alkathon keeps alumni connected as they work toward long-term success.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Most Popular Treatment for Alcoholism?

The most common approach to alcohol addiction treatment combines behavioral therapy with medical care. Evidence-based treatment methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing form the core and are delivered in individual sessions and group therapy. Medication and mutual aid groups provide further support, and co-occurring mental health conditions are treated when present.

How Can I Help a Loved One Who Does Not Want Help?

You cannot force someone to want recovery from addiction. Arms Acres is not a locked facility, so the person has to choose treatment for themselves. You can still help. Talk honestly when they are sober, name specific problems you have seen, and stop covering for the drinking. Then call our intake line for guidance and ask about our family treatment program.

What Medications Are Used to Treat Alcohol Use Disorder and Alcoholism?

Three medications are FDA-approved for alcohol use disorder, a type of substance use disorder. Naltrexone reduces cravings and the risk of relapse. Acamprosate helps people who have stopped drinking stay alcohol free. Disulfiram causes an unpleasant reaction if a person drinks. Other medications are used during detox to manage withdrawal. Your physician can explain whether medication is right for you.

How Much Does Alcohol Rehab Cost?

Cost depends on the level of care, the length of your stay, and your insurance. Arms Acres accepts most insurance, including Medicaid, Healthfirst, Fidelis Care, MetroPlusHealth, and MVP Healthcare. Before you arrive, an intake coordinator verifies your benefits, explains what your plan covers, and reviews private pay or self-pay options if needed.

How Long Is Alcohol Rehab?

Length depends on your needs and progress. Detox usually comes first, followed by rehab and then outpatient care. Many programs run between 30 and 90 days, and our guide to 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day alcohol rehab programs explains how the options compare.

Does Medicare Cover Alcohol Rehab?

Coverage depends on your specific Medicare plan and the type of care you need. Call our intake team at 888-227-4641, and they will check your benefits and explain your options before admission.
